July 15th 2013 Home Run Derby Picks

Tonight there are no games but there is the 2013 Home Run derby.  I took a look at the matchups and odds to win and will be placing some matchup wagers.  The things I look for in the home run derby for potential winners is experience, how a player handles pressure, how the player normally does in batting practice, overall power and hand / eye coordination.  I took a look at the field this year and I really don't know who is going to have the best home run derby but here are my thoughts on each player:

Chris Davis - ranks as the most powerful in the field but lacks experience in the home run derby.  He has an uppercut swing but he has average hand / eye coordination.  He could easily go off for 20+ in round one if he's on or he could get one or two.  First Round prediction: 12

Prince Fielder - has above average power and very good hand/eye coordination.  He also has experience in the home run derby and has succeeded in the past.  I expect Price to advance to at least the 2nd round.  First Round prediction: 11

Robinson Cano - Has a very smooth swing and normally has great hand / eye coordination.  He won the HR derby a few years ago and last year did horrible.  I think he comes back and has a very good derby this year.  First Round prediction: 9

Michael Cuddyer -   Above average power and good hand / eye coordination.  I think he'll struggle with the pressure but has been in the league a long time.  First Round Prediction: 5

Pedro Alvarez - Has very good power, probably the most out of anyone in the derby.  However, he has below average hand /eye coordination and the pressure will get to him.  First Round Prediction: 4

Bryce Harper - Great power but no experience.  I think he handles the pressure just fine and could win this derby.  He's a wild card at this point.  First Round Prediction: 14

David Wright - Great hand / eye coordination and experience.  He has less power than some of the other guys in the derby but with the juiced up balls he could actually do really well in the derby.  First Round Prediction: 8

Yoenis Cespedes - Above average power, pressure shouldn't affect him but I see some inconsistencies with his swing.   He could go on a run or he could just flame out and hit a bunch of line drives.  Hard to predict Cespedes.  First Round prediction: 7
